Kenny Habetz Injury Law | April 15, 2025 | Truck Accidents
There were 14.33 million single-unit and combination trucks registered in the U.S. as of 2022. Trucks are important for moving freight over land, but not all trucking companies are equally safe, and some have safety records that may be cause for concern.
The rankings below are based on crash data collected by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) during the two-year period ending April 2025.
1. United Parcel Service (UPS)
UPS tops the list with the most total crashes:
- 72 fatal crashes
- 824 injury crashes
- 1,564 tow-away crashes
- 2,460 total crashes
UPS has over 100,000 vehicles, which makes some accidents inevitable; however, this massive crash count should raise eyebrows.
2. J.B. Hunt Transport
This major trucking company operates across all 48 continental states with troubling numbers:
- 54 fatal crashes
- 523 injury crashes
- 1,057 tow-away crashes
- 1,634 total crashes
J.B. Hunt has faced repeated citations for maintenance violations like poorly maintained brakes and tires that create serious hazards on the highway.
3. FedEx Express
The delivery giant records concerning crash statistics:
- 31 fatal crashes
- 510 injury crashes
- 964 tow-away crashes
- 1,505 total crashes
FedEx ranks third in total crashes, but its fatal accident numbers are troubling, given the company’s emphasis on safety in its marketing.
4. Werner Enterprises
Werner is a major industry player that has accumulated a concerning safety record:
- 21 fatal crashes
- 230 injury crashes
- 562 tow-away crashes
- 813 total crashes
Werner specializes in long-distance freight but reportedly faces many violations of hours-of-service non-compliance — putting tired drivers on the road.
5. Swift Transportation
Swift is one of the largest carriers in America and has been involved in thousands of crashes over the past decade.
- 35 fatal crashes
- 259 injury crashes
- 596 tow-away crashes
- 890 total crashes
Swift’s fleet size contributes to this total, but its crash rate per truck also raises concerns.
6. Schneider National
Schneider is known for its bright orange trucks and reports the following numbers:
- 11 fatal crashes
- 242 injury crashes
- 470 tow-away crashes
- 723 total crashes
Schneider’s trucks have been involved in hundreds of injury-causing crashes, with numerous violations for unsafe driving behaviors.
7. Estes Express Lines
Estes is a major less-than-truckload carrier showing significant crash numbers:
- 12 fatal crashes
- 169 injury crashes
- 391 tow-away crashes
- 572 total crashes
Estes’ numbers reflect its focus on urban and suburban delivery routes, with many low-speed accidents resulting in vehicle damage.
8. U.S. Xpress
U.S. Xpress is a smaller but significant carrier showing troubling statistics:
- 13 fatal crashes
- 158 injury crashes
- 340 tow-away crashes
- 511 total crashes
U.S. Xpress has a particularly troubling record regarding vehicle maintenance and unsafe driving.
9. Averitt Express
Averitt has lower total numbers but a concerning rate of serious accidents:
- 9 fatal crashes
- 94 injury crashes
- 222 tow-away crashes
- 325 total crashes
Though Averitt shows among the lowest total crashes among major carriers, its fatal crash rate per million miles is actually among the highest of any company listed.
10. CRST Expedited Inc
CRST has the lowest total crash numbers of the group:
- 9 fatal crashes
- 89 injury crashes
- 177 tow-away crashes
- 275 total crashes
CRST has faced criticism for its driver training practices and has accumulated numerous violations related to driver fitness issues.
What To Do After a Truck Accident
If you’re hurt in a truck accident in Lafayette, seek medical care immediately, even without obvious symptoms. Document everything: company name, truck number, and driver details. Remember that truck crashes differ from car accidents because trucking companies typically must follow federal regulations.
Sharing the Roads Safely With America’s Freight Trucks
By understanding trucking safety records, we can push for safer industry practices. If you’ve suffered injuries in an accident involving a commercial truck, knowing which company was involved can matter. Some of these companies have patterns of safety violations that can strengthen your case.
