Are you considering a career that requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL)? Driving a semi-truck isn’t the only opportunity that CDL holders can pursue in Louisiana. Movers, bus drivers, sanitation workers, delivery drivers, and even chauffeurs all need some type of CDL to qualify for their jobs.
There are several classes of CDLs recognized in the state of Louisiana. Each classification authorizes a driver to handle different vehicle weights and transport different types of cargo.
When Is a CDL Required?
With some exemptions, Louisiana law requires anyone operating a vehicle weighing 26,001 pounds or more to carry a CDL. Individuals using a commercial vehicle for personal use — such as driving a rented moving van — are exempt, however.
People using farm machinery are also exempt as long as they are operating machinery and other large vehicles within 150 miles of a farm.
Types of CDLs
There are three main types of CDLs in Louisiana: Class A, Class B, and Class C.
Class A
A Class A CDL is required to operate any vehicle with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) heavier than 26,001 and when the GCWR of the towed vehicle is over 10,000 pounds.
Class A is the most inclusive license. Anyone with a valid Class A can also operate vehicles that fall under Class B and Class C categories if they also have the appropriate endorsements.
Class B
A Class B CDL qualifies a driver to operate a single or combination vehicle if the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the single vehicle is over 26,000 pounds and the towed vehicle is 10,000 pounds or less. With the correct endorsements, a Louisiana driver with a Class B CDL can also operate any vehicle included in Class C licensing.
Class C
Class C includes any combination or single vehicle that isn’t contained in Class A or B. Examples include a vehicle that is large enough to transport 16 or more passengers, such as a school bus, or a vehicle that transports hazardous materials under the guidelines of the Hazardous Material Transportation Act.
Louisiana Endorsements
In addition to the correct CDL, additional certifications may be required for certain jobs.
Louisiana offers the following endorsements:
- Double or triple trailers
- School buses
- HAZMAT vehicles
- Tanks
To earn an endorsement, you must meet specific qualifications, such as a training course, and pass an exam.
Requirements For Getting a Louisiana CDL
There are two main requirements for applying for a CDL in Louisiana. First, you must be 18 years old, and you must already have a valid driver’s license. Anyone with an out-of-state driver’s license seeking a CDL in Louisiana must visit the Office of Motor Vehicles and apply for a Louisiana driver’s license.
You must also provide proof that you are physically fit to drive a commercial vehicle, including:
- An exam from a doctor holding Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration approval
- A completed medical examination report form
- A completed medical examiner’s certificate
It is also necessary to complete a separate form self-certifying that you are fit to drive a commercial vehicle.
Additionally, paying a variety of fees is required to secure a CDL. There is a fee for the CDL alone, as well as fees for additional skill tests and endorsements.
Protecting the Louisiana Community With Licensing
Driving big rigs, hazardous waste vehicles, or buses full of children is an important job. One small mistake can cause a catastrophic accident that may affect the lives of an entire community. Upholding strict skill-testing and licensing practices for commercial vehicles is one way Louisiana protects drivers, passengers, and the environment.
