Louisiana Motorcycle License Requirements

In 2022, there were 130,624 licensed motorcycle riders in Louisiana. To join this group and get your motorcycle license, you must meet a few crucial requirements.

  • Age requirements: First, you must be at least 17 years old to get a full motorcycle license. If you’re 16, however, you can obtain a permit with parental consent. The permit will allow you to start learning to operate the vehicle but will carry some restrictions, like only allowing you to drive between certain hours of the day.
  • Required documents: You will also need to provide proof of your identity. You can use your passport, state ID, birth certificate, or Social Security Card. You can also use your Real ID, which will be required for Louisiana residents starting in May of 2025.
  • Motorcycle safety courses: Louisiana doesn’t require you to take safety courses, but it’s always a good idea to do so. Not only can you learn important tips for navigating Lafayette safely on your bike, but these courses can also help you obtain lower insurance premiums.
  • Written test: You will need to pass the written test at your nearest Office of Motor Vehicles. It’s a multiple-choice exam that assesses your knowledge of traffic laws. You must get an 80% score to pass and get your permit.
  • Skills test: You can practice operating a motorcycle with the permit and then take the skills test. On the day of the exam, you will need to wear appropriate safety gear, including a helmet that’s approved by the Department of Transportation. Once you pass, you can receive an M endorsement on your existing driver’s license or get a separate motorcycle license.

If you complete the above requirements, you are eligible for a motorcycle license in Louisiana.

What Happens If You’re In A Motorcycle Accident?

Whether you’re a new motorcycle rider or you have years of experience, getting into an accident is always a possibility. Because Louisiana has a fault-based system for traffic collisions, you need to demonstrate whether you hold any blame for the accident. If you were partly at fault, you can still recover damages under Louisiana’s comparative fault laws, but your winnings will be reduced.

This is why it’s so crucial to have our team of lawyers on your side. We can demonstrate that you deserve fair compensation by investigating the accident and aggressively negotiating with insurance companies so that you can recover damages.

One of the most challenging aspects of these claims is negotiating with insurers because they’ll be looking for any way to keep from paying you. They could try bullying you or even attempt to pin all of the blame on you. We’ll fight in your corner to get you the help you need. If necessary, we can also take your claim to court.
